Ciry Breaks in Madrid

Madrid is a city that never sleeps, and is a prime choice for a city break thanks to the buzz of this nightlife and the world class art galleries and museums that provide entertainment by day.  If you are considering studying in Madrid, a short city break is good way to get an introduction to the capital of Spain.

The Plaza Major provides an excellent introduction to the culture of Madrid.  This central square is lined with cafes and bars from which to people watch, and by night, some of the most skilled buskers you will ever hear come out to play jaw-dropping classical Spanish guitar and flamenco music.  Just don’t assume that they want your loose change – many of these people are serious musicians with CDs to sell.

The Puerta del Sol is the buzzing centre of Madrid, and a good place to start a night out.  It is not uncommon for Madrilenos to eat out at midnight; this may not seem like a note of caution, but just beware if you happen to make the acquaintance of some locals that you may need a full stomach before going out to eat with your new friends!

The Prado and the Reina Sofia are among the best art galleries in Europe, and indeed the world, and millions flock to see the priceless art on display every year.  The Prado has perhaps the premier collection of European art in the world, and is based on what was formerly the Spanish Royal collection.  The undisputed world’s best collection of the work of Spanish painters contains the works of Velazquez, Goya, and El Greco to name but a few.  There are also many of the works of other European heavyweights of the art world such as Hieronymus Bosch, Titian, Raphael, Rembrandt and Botticelli, to name but a few.

The Museo Reina Sofia is the Spanish National museum of 20th century art.  Two of the most important modern artists of the last century were the Spaniards Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, and there are extensive collections of the work of both of these artists.  Picasso’s famous painting ‘Guernica’ is one of the centrepieces of the Reina Sofia.

City breaks to Madrid allow an introduction to the city that doesn’t have to cost a fortune.  Getting around the city is easy thanks to the excellent public transport network – particularly the Metro, or underground train system.
